Fire Island Rental Homes

What is it Going to Cost?

If you have never rented a home on Fire Island, you may be in for a little sticker shock, or maybe not. Depending on what kind of rental you are looking for, costs can go from a few thousand dollars for a share in Kismet, to over $20,000 for a house in Saltaire. Each community on Fire Island has it's own rules on what is allowed with regards to occupancy. Kismet for example really has no rules on how many people can rent a home or condo, while in Saltaire, more than one family, or two people from different families, are allow to rent a home together. Some see this as "stuck up" others see it as a blessing.

How About Kismet?

Kismet has long been known as one of the "party" communities on Fire Island. In recent years however, rising home prices have forced people to look to Kismet to purchase their "family" summer home. Because of this, Kismet has become a very family oriented community unlike in the past. "Deals" are still available, but rental homes will cost somewhere between $7k-$20K+ per season. FYI, the "season" refers to the time period from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend.

What is Saltaire All About?

Saltaire, my personal favorite, is considered by many to be one of the most conservative communities on the island. I think that is really due to the fact that most people never go to Saltaire and do not understand it. Anyone who has stayed there most likely will not go anywhere else. Quiet wooden boardwalks, clean beaches, and lack of public facilities, like restaurants and bars, keep Saltaire as close to the way it was 40 years ago. Times have changed, but most have not. Saltaire is home to one of the only children's summer camps (from 9am to 12pm weekdays), softball field and a basketball court.

Homes are only allowed to be rented by a single family, no shares are allowed. A rental home will cost between $10k and $30K+ for a full season.
